Home Remedies for Mould: What Works and What Doesn't

Posted on September 30, 2026

A dark patch in the corner of the room, a line along the window frame, black spots in the silicone seal: the first instinct is usually vinegar or a mould spray. Some home remedies genuinely help with small patches – others make things worse.

This guide puts alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, baking soda and bleach in order. It shows when you should clean mould yourself at all, how to protect yourself while you do it, and when a measurement is more useful than another round of scrubbing.

In short: small, superficial patches under about half a square metre can be removed by the occupants themselves, according to the German Environment Agency (UBA) – with 70–80 % alcohol, gloves and a mask. Vinegar does not belong on a wall, baking soda only cleans, bleach works but is harsh. If the moisture stays, the mould comes back whatever you clean with. For larger or recurring damage, a measurement before and after remediation is the better next step.

When home remedies are an option at all

The German Environment Agency (UBA) draws a clear line in its mould guideline: growth of small to medium extent – under 0.5 m² and only superficial – with a known cause can often be removed by the people affected themselves, provided they are not allergic to mould and do not have a disease of the immune system.

The half square metre is a guide value, not an absolute, and it applies per room – several affected corners are added together. “Superficial” means the growth sits on plaster, paint or sealant, not inside the plasterboard, the insulation or behind the wall.

So home remedies are an option when all of the following apply:

  • The area is smaller than about half a square metre – roughly an A1 sheet of paper.
  • The growth is superficial, the material underneath intact and dry.
  • The cause is known and fixed – a one-off water leak, say.
  • Nobody in the household is allergic to mould, has a chronic respiratory condition or a weakened immune system, and no small children use the room.

If one point does not apply, a specialist firm is the right route – and according to the UBA that holds even for small growth when the cause is unclear. If you have symptoms such as a cough or irritated eyes, read Mould symptoms and seek medical advice.

The remedies one by one

Remedy Works against mould? Suitable for Watch out
Alcohol 70–80 % Yes, on the surface Plaster, paint, wood, tiles Flammable – ventilate
Hydrogen peroxide 3 % Yes, on the surface Light, robust surfaces Bleaches – wear gloves
Vinegar Barely Tiles, glass (cleaning) Not on plaster or lime
Baking soda No, cleans only Stains, odours No substitute for alcohol
Bleach / chlorine Yes, aggressively Tiles, grout in a ventilated bathroom Fumes, bleaches, never with vinegar

Alcohol 70 to 80 %

The remedy of choice – for the UBA too: wipe plastered or painted walls with 70–80 % alcohol and a microfibre cloth. Ethanol or isopropanol (surgical spirit) from the pharmacy are suitable, methylated spirits diluted accordingly. The UBA names 70 % for dry surfaces and 80 % for damp ones.

Alcohol kills spores and hyphae on the surface and evaporates without leaving nutrients behind. Apply with a cloth, not a spray, and wipe a second time once the surface has dried. Ventilate well – alcohol is flammable: small amounts, no smoking, no open flame.

Hydrogen peroxide 3 %

The 3 % solution from the pharmacy oxidises the fungal cells and then breaks down into water and oxygen; the German consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale) lists it as an option when remediation is not immediately possible. It bleaches and only works on the surface – so use it only on light, robust surfaces, and wear gloves.

Vinegar

The classic – and the wrong choice on a wall. The UBA explicitly advises against vinegar solutions on vapour-open building materials: lime plaster and other mineral surfaces neutralise the acid, and the vinegar brings organic matter onto the wall that serves the mould as a nutrient substrate. Both can promote growth rather than inhibit it.

On tiles or glass, vinegar cleans, nothing more – there, according to the UBA, water and a household cleaner do the job just as well.

Baking soda and bicarbonate of soda

Baking soda is a mild cleaning and deodorising agent, not a disinfectant: it wipes off the stain and binds odours, but it does not reliably kill spores. It does not appear in the recommendations of the UBA or the consumer advice centres – if you use it, wipe down with alcohol afterwards.

Bleach and chlorine-based mould removers

Household bleach and most mould sprays contain sodium hypochlorite. It reliably kills mould on the surface, but the fumes irritate the airways and eyes, it bleaches colours, grout and textiles – and mixed with acids such as vinegar it releases chlorine gas.

The UBA advises against chemical fungicides indoors; for surface growth that can be removed with simple means, biocides are unnecessary. If at all, use bleach only in a well-ventilated bathroom on tiles and grout, with gloves and safety glasses – never on porous plaster.

Working safely: protecting yourself and the room

Spores, fungal fragments and dust are the real risk when cleaning – dead mould is allergenic too. The UBA therefore recommends working with as little dust as possible:

  • Protective equipment: disposable gloves, a fine-dust mask (FFP2) and safety glasses for overhead work. Dispose of mask and gloves afterwards.
  • No dry brushing, no sweeping – that spreads spores across the room. Wipe damp, moisten wallpaper before removing it, vacuum only with a HEPA filter.
  • Ventilate: windows open during and after the work, door to the rest of the home closed.
  • Empty room: children, pregnant women, pets and sensitive people stay out; food, toys and textiles go out first.
  • Disposal: cloths, wallpaper scraps and masks go into a tear-proof bin bag, sealed tightly without squeezing the air out, and into the household waste. Wash work clothes thoroughly.

Why painting over is not a solution

Paint hides the patch, nothing more. The fungus stays in the plaster, the moisture stays, and after a few weeks the growth shows through again – often over a larger area. The UBA guideline lists painting over only as a temporary immediate measure to bind the growth.

The same goes for anti-mould paints: according to the UBA their biocides usually have no lasting effect under real-world conditions, and the consumer advice centre considers them pointless to dangerous as long as the cause of the moisture remains. The order is always: remove, fix the cause, dry, then paint.

The cause decides – not the remedy

Mould needs moisture – no home remedy changes that. The UBA puts it plainly: unless the cause is identified and eliminated, the mould keeps coming back. Typical causes:

  • Condensation: warm room air cools on cold external walls, in corners and behind furniture – classically behind the wardrobe on the outside wall.
  • Thermal bridges: window reveals, roller-shutter boxes and balcony junctions are colder than the rest of the wall – that is where it starts first.
  • Leaks: leaking pipes, roofs, façades or silicone seals – often invisible until the patch appears.
  • Construction moisture: a new build, rising damp in the cellar, a water-damage event that was never fully dried.

For condensation, heating, short bursts of ventilation and a gap between furniture and the outside wall help. A specialist firm is needed in any case if:

  • the area is larger than about 0.5 m² or the material is affected in depth,
  • the growth sits in cavities, behind cladding or in the insulation,
  • the mould comes back after cleaning or the cause is unclear,
  • occupants have symptoms or belong to the sensitive groups.

Tenants should inform the landlord in writing before doing anything themselves; in a dispute, a tenants' association or legal adviser can help.

Measure before and after: when a sample makes sense

For a small, superficial patch with a clear cause you do not need a lab analysis – clean, dry, watch. For larger, recurring or unclear damage, a measurement answers two questions the eye cannot: is the growth bigger than it looks – and is it really gone after the remediation?

Before: an air sample in the affected room, compared with the outdoor air, shows whether the spore load is elevated – a pointer to hidden growth behind furniture, cladding or in cavities. A surface test (swab or tape lift) clarifies whether a stain is mould at all and which genera are growing.

After: after a larger remediation, a clearance test is the evidence that the room can be used normally again – indoor air against outdoor air, assessed according to the UBA guideline and the German WTA guideline 4-12; there is no legal limit value. How that works: Clearance testing after mould remediation.

With the AirTrap complete sets you take the air samples yourself: five minutes per room plus one outdoor sample, analysis in the accredited Sporecyte laboratory, report within 48 hours of arrival at the lab with an outdoor comparison and images from the slide. For stains there are the surface tests; when a lab is needed is covered in DIY mould test or lab? If you are not sure which test fits, our team can help via the contact page.

Frequently asked questions about home remedies for mould

Does vinegar work against mould?
On tiles or glass it cleans, nothing more. On plaster and other mineral surfaces the UBA advises against it: the acid is neutralised, and the organic content can feed the mould.

Which alcohol is the right one?
Ethanol or isopropanol at 70 to 80 % – the UBA names 70 % for dry and 80 % for damp surfaces. Apply with a cloth, do not spray, ventilate well, no open flame.

How do I know whether the stain is mould at all?
Dark stains can also be soot, dust or salt efflorescence. A surface test with lab analysis gives certainty and names the genus.

Do I need a measurement after cleaning?
Not for a small patch. After a larger remediation, with recurring growth or when occupants have symptoms, an air sample with an outdoor comparison gives clarity.
